About Us

Thanks for visiting our website! Digital Roots Studio was founded in 2012 by Sean Sexton & Andrea Sexton Dumas, just 8 months after their wedding at Lake Merritt Gardens in Oakland, CA.  Oakland born and raised, Sean and Andrea met as students at Bishop O'Dowd high school, and reconnected on MySpace 8 years after graduation (thanks, Tom!), quickly bonding over their love of story-telling and entrepreneurial projects.

When the first LaCie CD burner came out in the mid-1990s, Sean was the first kid in school to have one, creating mix-CDs for classmates.  This personal passion led to a professional interest for all things digital, from anti-virus software tech support to video conversions and film digitization.

Meanwhile Andrea was collecting family stories from her grandmother and working at the school's bookstore.  Andrea's enthusiasm for narration through reading and writing later morphed into a career path of sales and customer service, although those family anecdotes were never too far from mind.

It was, however, the after-effects of the 2008 depression that inspired this couple in love to become business partners; Sean's experience with computers and converting analog materials to digital melded seamlessly with Andrea's background in small business and preserving family history.

Digital Roots Studio started in a one-bedroom apartment, and we'd meet our trusting clients at the local mailshop by appointment.  Over 10 years and 4 offices later, we continue to serve many returning clients, our local community, and customers throughout the U.S. and abroad.

With 30 years of combined experience in digital media preservation and over 40 years of customer service experience, we pride ourselves on providing superior digital transferring & archiving results for an honest price and with a smile.

When we aren't transferring your memories to digital, you may find Sean biking on the Bay Trails or Andrea tending to the garden with Churro (the dog) and Banana (the cat) nearby.

About the Business

Digital Roots Studio is still owned and operated by Andrea and Sean. No outsourcing and no employees.

To keep our prices affordable and be as efficient as possible, we consult with our clients over the phone and have clients set an appointment to drop off. This allows us to review the project, ask and answer questions and create a formal estimate ahead of time; once the appointment time comes, the project is given to Sean or Andrea at the door without the client needing to come into the office. If a client absolutely needs to come into our office to review their materials, we can make exceptions, but its very seldom necessary.

This saves us time, therefore we can turn around projects more quickly which makes for happy clients. We don’t limit appointments and if you come without an appointment you can still speak with one of us at the door.

“They were able to provide a truly amazing slide show for a life celebration that my whole family was thoroughly impressed by. Everyone was asking for their info as we all have memories that we need to have archived to pass on to our next generations. I couldn't recommend them any higher!”

— Andre B. Dublin, CA

“Sean and Andrea were great to work with. They took my old VHS cassette tapes, digitized them, and uploaded the mp4 video files to a secure server. Communication was excellent, price was fair and I'll certainly be back again. Thanks!”

— Robyn H. Oakland, CA

“They transferred 8mm film and a few old prints to digital video format and jpeg format. Unlike  many similar online services, this business does all transfer work in house. So there's less risk of your precious family analog memories getting lost in transit.”

— Timothy M. North Berkeley, CA
