16mm film

Our film transfer process

  • Prior to digitizing your film we will organize and number each reels. After organizing we then clean the film, add leader when necessary and repair broken splices when needed.
  • Please arrange reels in order prior to handing them over to Digital Roots Studio if you would like to have the reels captured in a certain order.
  • All transfers are done in-house using the Sniper HD Pro Transfer Unit which has frame by frame scanning capabilities with an enlarged gate allowing access to the entire film frame.
  • Please see the Film Length table to calculate or estimate how much content you have.
  • Unlike other film transfer houses, we DO NOT project your film on a wall and record the footage on a digital camera.
  • We use a digital process to remove color casts (typically red, yellow, or blue). We also try to compensate for under- or over-exposed film.
  • All film is captured 1080p (1920x1080) frame-by-frame using the Blackmagic Motion JPEG codec.
  • Transfers can be output in HD 1920x1080 or down-converted to SD 720x480 rendering higher quality standard definition video.
Customers ARE NOT charged for blank spots within the film; only actual footage will be applied to your invoice.

Film Capturing Equipment

All of our film transfers are done using the HD Sniper Pro frame by frame film capturing unit. We do not transfer your film by projecting your footage on the wall and video recording it to a deck. All transfers go through our Black Magic capture card and every frame is captured and then compiled at the end of the transfer process.

  Output options
You have two options for output, either playable DVD/Blu-Ray or AVI/MOV file for editing on your computer system. If you only want to view your video on your television or computer DVD player then you do not need editable footage. High Definition transfers need to be burned to Blu-Ray if you opt for playable output. If you choose editable files you have a choice between AVI/MOV file for standard definition and MotionJPEG AVI for high defition output for editing.
